MSN Messenger instant message service provider is amongst the most popular freeware clients that has been designed by Microsoft in the year 1999 to 2005 and distributed by the same. In the year 2007 it was developed to the computers that had the operating system Microsoft Windows and the home users were targeted. In February 2006, the MSN Messenger was renamed Windows Live Messenger which was a part of the “Microsoft's Windows Live series”. MSN Messenger is also called the .NET Messenger Service. Since the launch of the MSN Messenger, a number of versions of the same have come. MSN Messenger 1 featured the basic services like plain text messaging service with a very simple list of contacts.

MSN Messenger 2.0 featured a banner of advertisement which rotated and chat window had some minor customizing facilities. With the launch of MSN Messenger 3 one could now transfer files as well use it PC to PC as well as PC to phone with Net2Phone and had audio facilities. MSN Messenger 4.6 introduced a wide number of changes in the user interface which allowed the facility for group contacts and also supported voice conversations. It was with the launch of this version that "MSN Messenger Service" renamed as "MSN Messenger".
MSN Messenger 4.6 could only run on 9x, ME, NT and 2000 versions of the Windows operating system. For Windows XP, Windows Messenger was launched. MSN Messenger 5 highlighted features like UPnP or Universal Plug and Play for file transfers and for customizing the UI. However it does not run on operating systems which came before Windows 95. The MSN Messenger 6 brought about the elements which could be customized and these included personalized avatars, emoticons and backgrounds. MSN Messenger 6.1 emphasized on the chat window and enabled facilities like window frame and menu bar hide with a facility to change the window theme color. MSN Messenger 6.2 enabled mobile contact capabilities, trouble-shooter and few other interesting facilities. MSN Messenger 7.0 had features like display pictures which were animated, animated emoticons and customizable backgrounds. The list of contacts was updated. This version also introduced the Xbox Live Integration feature. This is the last major MSN Messenger version for Windows 98 and Windows Me. MSN Messenger 7.0 and 7.5 users needed to update with WLM 8.1. MSN Messenger 7.5 brought about Passport credentials system upgradation. Other features were Dynamic Backgrounds, Voice Clips and protocol handler. The MSN Web Messenger offers facility to set up instant-message contact with people existing on their contact list even from computers which didn’t have the program installment done.
To connect to the .NET Messenger Service, MSN Messenger makes use of Microsoft Notification Protocol abbreviated as MSNP. The features of MSN Messenger also include the game facilities and applications which are also provided in the Windows Live Messenger. There is a competition in the market between MSN Messenger and AIM and ICQ and Google Talk. About MSN Messenger there has always been a criticism for being always targeted to the users of of the Windows operating system leaving no scope for the Macintosh and Linux users.
