SMS on Mobile

The Short Message Service or SMS on Mobile often called text messaging, is a process of sending short messages to and from mobile phones. SMS was originally defined as part of the GSM series of standards in 1985 as a means of sending messages of up to 160 characters, to and from GSM mobile handsets. Since then, support for the service has expanded to include alternative mobile standards such as ANSI CDMA networks and Digital AMPS, as well as satellite and land line networks. Most SMS messages are mobile-to-mobile text messages, though the standard supports other types of broadcast messaging as well.

The term SMS on mobile is frequently used in a non-technical sense to refer to the text messages themselves, particularly in non-English-speaking European countries where the GSM system is well-established. Unlike paging, but similar to e-mail,SMS on Mobile are stored and forwarded at SMS centers, which means you can retrieve your messages later if you are not immediately available to receive them. SMS on mobile travel to the cellphone over the system's control channel, which is separate and apart from the voice channel. SMS on Mobile makes use of service centre which acts as a store and forward centre for short messages. The Service Centre communicates with the Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) or PSTN via Inter working and Gateway MSCs (Microsoft Cluster Server). With the popularity and rise in usage of real time text-based communications such as instant message, e-mail, Internet and online gaming chat rooms, discussion boards and cellphone text messaging came the emergence of a new language tailored to the immediacy and compactness of these new communication media. That is teenagers and youngsters sometimes use whacky short form of instant messaging.
